Weekly fact-sourced intelligence for racket sports professionals — trends, headlines, and member takeaways from across the industry.

Top Trends This Week
The Picklr Files Chapter 11One of the largest indoor pickleball franchisors filed for Chapter 11, with CEO Jorge Barragan citing corporate lease guarantees; the parent lost $4.4M on $10.3M revenue in 2025 and secured $4.5M to keep its clubs open.
ATP Targets $350M Player PayAndrea Gaudenzi's proposal would lift total ATP player compensation (excluding Grand Slams) to $350M from 2028, raise the bonus pool from $21.5M to $50M, and add $30M per year in pensions covering roughly 300 players.
US Padel Crosses 1,100 CourtsThe FIP World Padel Report 2026 counts 1,160 US courts (about 50% growth), and Misitrano's census counts 1,110 across 38 states, up 61.6% in a year; the US ranks 3rd in padel GDP behind Spain and Italy.
USTA Courts Certified CoachesUSTA Coaching, which launched its own certification in August 2025, published an employer-side business case: certified coaches signal career commitment, carry Safe Play compliance, serve more segments, and drive retention and cross-spend.
CourtsApp Scales Booking MarketplaceCourtsApp went national with 67,000+ places to play and 280,000+ courts on one AI-powered marketplace, integrating Google Reserve, ChatGPT, Claude, and DUPR; CEO Daren Hornig calls it the Expedia of racquet sports.
College Padel League LaunchesWilson ACPL by Bela, America's first national collegiate padel league, brings 35+ schools and 200+ student-athletes across four divisions, with city stages starting in October and a national champion crowned in March.

The week's defining theme was capital discipline: The Picklr's Chapter 11 filing put the chain-driven indoor pickleball model under scrutiny even as operators argued that programming, not demand, is what's broken. Meanwhile the FIP World Padel Report 2026 confirmed US padel crossed 1,100 courts, the ATP outlined a $350M player compensation plan, CourtsApp scaled a national booking marketplace, and America's first college padel league launched. For ARA, every headline points the same direction: the workforce, programming, and data layers of racquet sports are professionalizing fast.

📌Week of October 13-19, 2026

🎾 Industry Headlines

The Picklr files Chapter 11; clubs stay open. One of the country's largest indoor pickleball franchisors filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, with CEO Jorge Barragan pointing to costly corporate lease guarantees as the cause. The parent lost $4.4M on $10.3M of revenue in 2025 and secured $4.5M in new financing to keep operations running, and Barragan says no locations will close as a direct result of the filing.¹ ² Franchisee entities had already filed separately in late September.³

ATP outlines a $350M player compensation plan for 2028. Under proposals presented by ATP Chairman Andrea Gaudenzi and reported by Reuters on Oct 15, total player compensation (excluding Grand Slams) would reach $350M from 2028, the bonus pool would rise from $21.5M to $50M, a $30M-per-year pension would cover roughly the top 300 players, and ranking points would be redistributed to reward deeper runs at bigger events, easing the pressure of the 11-month calendar.⁴ ⁵

USTA Coaching makes the employer-side case for certified coaches. USTA Coaching, which launched its own coach certification in August 2025, published a business-case feature arguing that hiring certified coaches is good business: certification signals career commitment, embeds Safe Play compliance and background screening, produces coaches who can serve more customer segments, and drives both direct programming revenue and club cross-spend.⁶

🏟️ Facility & Infrastructure

  • US padel crossed 1,100 courts. The FIP World Padel Report 2026 counts 1,160 US padel courts (roughly 50% year-over-year growth), while industry tracker Patricio Misitrano counts 1,110 across 38 states, up 61.6% in a year. Spain remains the benchmark at 17,730 courts: 15x the US total on about 5% of the land area.⁷
  • Padel's US economics are stronger than its spending suggests. The FIP report ranks the US 12th globally in padel spending (just under €200M per year) but 3rd in the GDP the sport generates, behind only Spain and Italy: value is flowing into the US economy from the global padel supply chain faster than Americans are spending on the sport itself.⁷
  • Cliff Drysdale sunsets its tennis-only brand. The Troon-owned operator is now Cliff Drysdale Management, with a refreshed identity reflecting an expanded remit across all racquet sports, club operations, food and beverage, and wellness.⁸
  • October is National Padel Month. USA Padel's industry-wide push includes the US Open Padel Championships and club-level new-player programming across member clubs, including the Athena Padel Cup women's event in Miami (Oct 12-15).⁹

📈 Trends & Insights

Booking platforms race to own court access. CourtsApp went national claiming 67,000+ places to play and 280,000+ courts on a single AI-powered discovery and booking marketplace, pushing racquet inventory into Google Reserve, AI assistants like ChatGPT and Claude, and DUPR. CEO Daren Hornig positions it as the Expedia of racquet sports.¹⁰ Discovery-and-booking is becoming a competitive layer of the industry, and facilities should make sure their inventory is visible and accurately described before someone else brokers their demand.

College padel gets a front door. Wilson ACPL by Bela, the first national collegiate padel league in the US, brings together 35+ schools and 200+ student-athletes across four regional divisions, with free school registration, $25-per-year player membership, city stages starting this month, and a national champion crowned in March.¹¹

Chains stumble while operators adapt. Alongside the Picklr filing, operators behind Dill Dinkers, Epic, and Ballers argue that indoor pickleball demand is sound and the lease-and-build model is what's broken.² The same fault line is visible in the UK's $300M indoor padel buildout, which remains on bubble watch: the market is separating capital-intensive chains from programming-led operators.

The coaching bottleneck is the industry's real constraint. FIP counts roughly 11,000 coaching licences worldwide against 27 million frequent players. Credential bodies are moving to professionalize the workforce, and in the same week PTR confirmed that PPR, PCR, and PPTR credentials all earn equal continuing-education credit, reducing friction for multi-sport coaches.¹²

💡 ARA Member Takeaways

  • Hiring is becoming credential-aware. USTA Coaching's employer-facing argument means certification will increasingly be a hiring filter. Document credentials and track record when hiring, and expect candidates to be screened against professional baselines.
  • The program-first thesis keeps winning. Between the Picklr Chapter 11 and UK padel bubble warnings, facilities that pair modest lease exposure with strong programming, leagues, and community events are best positioned for 2027 budgeting. Program first, build second.
  • College padel opens youth pipeline doors. With 35+ campuses in the ACPL, coaches and facilities near member schools can build feeder programming at the high school and college level now.
  • Coaching careers are the safest growth bet in racquet sports. Twenty-seven million frequent players against roughly 11,000 licensed coaches worldwide is a generational workforce gap, and ARA's coaching support and careers lanes point directly at it.
