The principles and expectations for all ARA members.

American Racket Sports Association (ARA) Code of Ethics

Preamble

The American Racket Sports Association (ARA), established in 1977, is committed to advancing the professionalism, integrity, and inclusivity of racket sports professionals across tennis, pickleball, padel, squash, table tennis, racquetball, badminton, and platform tennis. As a member of ARA, you are expected to uphold the highest standards of ethical conduct, serving as a role model for students, colleagues, and the community. This Code of Ethics outlines the principles and expectations for all ARA members to ensure the growth and positive impact of racket sports.

1. Professional Integrity

  • Honesty and Fairness: Members must act with honesty and fairness in all professional interactions, including teaching, coaching, business dealings, and certifications.
  • Representation: Members shall accurately represent their qualifications, certifications, and affiliations, avoiding misrepresentation of their skills or ARA's endorsement.
  • Confidentiality: Respect the privacy of students, clients, and colleagues by safeguarding confidential information unless required by law to disclose.

2. Respect and Inclusivity

  • Non-Discrimination: Members must foster an inclusive environment, free from discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, age, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or any other protected characteristic.
  • Respectful Conduct: Treat all individuals—students, colleagues, competitors, and facility staff—with dignity, respect, and professionalism, both on and off the court.
  • Safe Environment: Maintain a safe and supportive environment, free from harassment, bullying, or abuse of any kind, including verbal, physical, or emotional misconduct.

3. Commitment to the Profession

  • Professional Development: Members are encouraged to pursue continuous learning through professional certifications, continuing education, workshops, and industry events to enhance their skills and knowledge.
  • Upholding Standards: Adhere to the standards of your certification organization, teaching methodologies, and safety protocols to ensure high-quality instruction and coaching.
  • Promotion of Racket Sports: Actively promote the growth of racket sports by fostering participation, community engagement, and positive experiences for players of all levels.

4. Responsibility to Students and Clients

  • Student Welfare: Prioritize the physical, mental, and emotional well-being of students, ensuring safe and age-appropriate instruction.
  • Fair Treatment: Provide equitable opportunities and instruction to all students, tailoring coaching to meet individual needs and goals.
  • Avoiding Exploitation: Refrain from engaging in romantic, dating, or sexual relationships with students or athletes under your coaching, including for two years after the coaching relationship ends, to maintain trust and avoid exploitation. Members bear the burden of proving no exploitation if allegations arise.

5. Ethical Business Practices

  • Transparency: Clearly communicate fees, schedules, and expectations to clients, avoiding deceptive or misleading practices.
  • Conflict of Interest: Disclose and manage any potential conflicts of interest that may compromise professional judgment or objectivity.
  • Compliance: Adhere to all applicable laws, regulations, and facility policies, including those related to safety, licensing, and insurance.

6. Accountability and Enforcement

  • Reporting Violations: Members are obligated to report suspected violations of this Code of Ethics to ARA leadership promptly, ensuring accountability within the organization.
  • Disciplinary Action: Violations of this Code may result in sanctions, including suspension, termination of membership, or referral to legal authorities, as determined by ARA's Ethics Committee.
  • Annual Acknowledgment: Members must annually sign a statement acknowledging receipt, understanding, and commitment to comply with this Code of Ethics. (This will be an email reminder statement due to auto renew system that "due to paying your dues" you accept)

7. Community and Role Modeling

  • Positive Representation: Act as an ambassador for ARA and racket sports, demonstrating sportsmanship, humility, and leadership in all interactions.
  • Community Engagement: Contribute to the racket sports community through mentorship, volunteerism, or advocacy for accessibility and growth of the sports.
  • Moral Integrity: Uphold personal conduct that reflects positively on the profession, avoiding actions that could harm ARA's reputation or the public's trust.

Enforcement Procedures

  • Ethics Committee: ARA's Ethics Committee will review reported violations, conduct fact-finding, and recommend appropriate actions.
  • Sanctions: Depending on the severity of the violation, sanctions may include warnings, probation, suspension, or permanent expulsion from ARA.
  • Appeals Process: Members may appeal disciplinary decisions through a formal process outlined in ARA's bylaws.

Acknowledgment

By maintaining membership in ARA, you agree to abide by this Code of Ethics and accept responsibility for upholding its principles. Failure to comply may result in disciplinary action, up to and including termination of membership.
